How a 19-Year-Old Found Community and Purpose

A year ago, City of Refuge officially opened The 345, a housing program for men at high risk of homelessness. These are the stories of some of its residents.

Isaak’s high school years were marked by constant trouble. Suspensions were frequent, and expulsion was always a looming threat. His troubles peaked in his junior year with a significant run-in with the law. Fortunately, the charges were dropped, allowing him to graduate high school. Yet, after graduation, Isaak found himself at a crossroads, uncertain of his future.

Then, Isaak learned about City of Refuge’s comprehensive programs and supportive environment seemed like the perfect opportunity for a fresh start. After an interview and background checks, Isaak was accepted into the program, marking the beginning of his transformation.

A Community of Support

Isaak credits the people at City of Refuge as the most significant factor in his personal growth. The staff and residents exude positivity and support, creating an environment where he feels valued and understood. “The people here have helped me grow a lot as a person. Everyone's in a good mood. No one treats you even neutrally. They're always smiling,” he said.

Among the many services offered by City of Refuge, Isaak says the NAPA Auto Training program has been incredibly helpful. Plus, just a month into the four-month program, he secured a job on the maintenance team at City of Refuge. And since he’s living right around the corner at The 345, he’s been able to walk to work and not have to deal with the stress of transportation issues.

Living at The 345, City of Refuge’s housing complex for men at risk of homelessness, Isaak has found more than just a roof over his head. He’s found a family.

“We’re a unit. It’s like a family,” he said. “We work together. You can ask people for help.” The support from his Resident Advisors (like Terrence Franklin, Bruce, Willie, and Knock) and fellow residents has been critical. They’ve offered guidance and a listening ear whenever Isaak needed it, reinforcing the sense of community and support that City of Refuge fosters.

Being the youngest resident at The 345 was initially intimidating for Isaak. However, he soon realized that the older residents had invaluable wisdom to share. Many had faced and overcome challenges similar to his own, providing him with practical advice and emotional support. The camaraderie and mutual assistance among the residents has been crucial in helping Isaak navigate his new path.

Isaak’s future is now filled with hope and ambition. He dreams of finding a stable job that brings him happiness and allows him to live independently. The biggest lesson he’s learned at City of Refuge has been a powerful one: “I’m not alone.” The community has shown him that in any situation, there are people ready to support him.

Isaak’s story is a testament to the transformative power of community and support. City of Refuge has provided him with the tools, opportunities, and, most importantly, the belief that he can build a better future. Isaak's journey from a troubled past to a hopeful future embodies the mission of City of Refuge—to provide light, hope, and transformation for those in crisis.
