"If I’m gonna do the restaurant thing, I want to go as a leader, a shift manager--something higher than what I’ve been doing.”

Since she was 14 years old, Tybrina has been working in the fast food industry. Originally from Washington DC, she got her start at McDonalds and continued on the career path ever since. In her twenties, she tried taking different classes to better herself after high school, but nothing seemed to stick.

When she turned 30 she recalled thinking to herself, "If I’m gonna do the restaurant thing, I want to go as a leader, a shift manager--something higher than what I’ve been doing.”

Chasing After Her Goals

Two years later, she found herself on Indeed ready to make her next career move. When she saw a Shift Manager opening at Arby's, she went in for an interview. That's when she heard about City of Refuge and their partnered job training program with Arby's.

During the three-week program, Tybrina learned more than just managerial skills from Chef D and the City of Refuge team. "They taught me life skills," said Tybrina. "You know, what not to do, how to react and carry yourself in public.”

Before the Arby's program, Tybrina and her fiance had been living in a hotel for 7 months. Since graduating the program, she's excelled at her new Shift Manager job at Arby's and secured an apartment.

"I learned everything I know now from the program," said Tybrina. "It makes me better in life. Everything is coming together."

Hope for the Future

When asked where she'd like to be in the next five years, she said, "I'd like to be a General Manager and eventually move up to have my own store one day."

Tybrina thanks those who made the program possible: "Thanks for the opportunity, the growth, and for believing in me.”
