“A Bridge to Heaven”: Ms. Carolyn’s Story

Ms. Carolyn’s life has been far from easy. “It’s been a hard road,” she said. “But City of Refuge gave me a chance to live again.”

The youngest of five children, she grew up in poverty in Cochran, GA, facing adversity with remarkable strength. “It was really bad. We made the best of it,” she said. On top of everything else, her father, a military veteran, battled with PTSD.

Despite her challenges, Ms. Carolyn kept her faith at the forefront of her life. “I kept my mind focused on God. He gave me strength. What He gave me, I used it positively to survive.” She completed high school and entered the workforce in manufacturing.

However, at the age of 37, Ms. Carolyn faced a severe setback when she suffered a stress-induced stroke. “I couldn't think. I couldn't do the things I wanted to,” she recalls. With two young daughters to care for, followed by another son, she struggled to provide for them amidst the turmoil.

Subsequent years brought further trials as she navigated a tumultuous relationship with her son's father—a man who took advantage of her vulnerability and inflicted emotional abuse. “I didn’t know what was better,” she said, highlighting the complexities of her situation.

Eventually, Ms. Carolyn reached a breaking point. She left her living situation but found herself homeless, with nowhere to turn. For eight months, she endured the harsh realities of life on the streets and in temporary stays at hotels, grappling with uncertainty and despair.

“Like a Bridge to Heaven”

While receiving medical treatment at Mercy Care, she learned about City of Refuge—a beacon of hope amidst the darkness of her circumstances. Eventually, she was given a spot in Eden Village, the organization's holistic shelter for women.

When she got the call, Ms. Carolyn experienced a profound sense of relief and gratitude. “I can’t describe it. I felt like I was dreaming. I just feel like a weight was lifted off of my body,” she recounts, overwhelmed by the newfound stability and support.

For Ms. Carolyn, City of Refuge represented more than just a shelter; it was a sanctuary of peace and renewal. “I never thought I would be somewhere that felt like I’m in heaven,” she said.

Embracing the opportunities afforded to her, Ms. Carolyn eagerly participated in the organization's programs and classes, finding encouragement in church services and helpful skills in educational offerings. With aspirations of pursuing a career in the food industry, she plans to enroll in City of Refuge's culinary job training course.

With the help of City of Refuge, Ms. Carolyn's journey came full circle when she transitioned into her own apartment, marking a significant milestone in her path toward independence and self-sufficiency. “It’s a beautiful feeling. I’m speechless. I’m happy, joyful, and overwhelmed.”

Reflecting on her journey, Ms. Carolyn acknowledges the profound impact of City of Refuge, describing it as a bridge from despair to hope. “This place is a bridge that brought me from ground zero to heaven,” she reflects.

As Ms. Carolyn continues her transformation journey, City of Refuge is honored to continue providing the holistic support and care she needs.
